In a powerful demonstration of their deep bilateral ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, with a warm greeting, referring to him as an "old friend." This meeting marks the beginning of a series of high-level discussions between the two leaders, held at a critical juncture where both nations are grappling with overlapping and distinct challenges posed by the United States. The relationship between Beijing and Moscow has grown significantly closer in recent years, particularly in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, which has strengthened their strategic coordination.

In a reciprocation of the warm sentiment, President Putin hailed President Xi as a "dear friend," emphasizing that the relationship between their two countries has reached an "unprecedented high level." Following their initial official talks, the presidents plan to meet again, this time accompanied by their top aides, highlighting the comprehensive and high-stakes nature of these discussions.
The talks are strategically timed, occurring after both presidents attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and just a day before a major Chinese military parade in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This anniversary holds significant historical weight, as the Soviet Union, while largely neutral during the war in Asia, provided crucial early support to China in its fight against Japanese forces in the 1930s. The Soviet Union also declared war on Japan in the final days of WWII, sending troops across the border into Japanese-occupied northeastern China.
Reflecting on this shared history, Putin remarked, "We were always together back then, and we remain together now," underscoring the enduring nature of their alliance. This meeting is more than a simple exchange of views; it is a powerful affirmation of a burgeoning strategic partnership, a reflection of a shared vision for a multipolar world, and a collective effort to enhance their influence on the global stage.
