Beijing has solidified its position as a global hub for intellectual property (IP), reaching a record of 171.8 high-value patents per 10,000 residents as of June 2024. According to Meng Bo, head of the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office, the city’s valid patents soared to 695,000, marking a staggering 128.2% increase compared to 2020 levels. This growth is complemented by a surge in trademark registrations, which now exceed 3.28 million, reflecting a robust and dynamic business environment.

A key highlight of Beijing’s strategy is the successful commercialization of research; over 249,000 patents from universities and research institutes have been matched with approximately 30,000 companies. To protect these assets, Beijing enacted the country's first comprehensive local $IP$ protection regulation and established a support system for domestic and foreign firms facing overseas legal risks. In the first half of 2025 alone, patent transfers and licensing rose by 7%, demonstrating the city's commitment to transforming intellectual achievements into tangible industrial productivity.
