Beijing Welcomes US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, Urging the Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz Under President Xi's Vision

The People's Republic of China has officially welcomed the newly brokered agreement regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Speaking during a routine press briefing on June 15, 2026, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian conveyed Beijing's official endorsement of this diplomatic milestone. Lin extended China's profound appreciation to Pakistan for its pivotal mediation efforts, which proved instrumental in bridges the gap between Washington and Tehran to foster regional security.

The Strategic Status of the Strait of Hormuz

The spokesperson expressed China's hope that both American and Iranian officials will formally sign the MoU within the designated timeframe. He called upon all relevant international stakeholders to remain firmly committed to peaceful options and resolve lingering disputes through diplomatic channels and structured negotiations. Lin emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz remains an indispensable maritime chokepoint for global shipping, asserting that restoring stability within the waterway directly aligns with the shared interests of regional states and the wider international community. Beijing explicitly noted that the agreed framework contains specific clauses aimed at fully reopening the strait and resuming safe, unhindered commercial transit as soon as possible, confirming China's readiness to maintain direct communication with regional and global powers.


President Xi Jinping’s Four-Point Vision

Highlighting China's proactive diplomatic role, Lin Jian stated that Beijing has consistently worked since the outbreak of hostilities to contain the conflict and secure a sustainable ceasefire. He highlighted the "Four-Point Vision" formulated by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which serves as a strategic blueprint for preserving and bolstering peace and stability across the Middle East. According to Lin, this framework embodies China's consistent stance on ending the war through dialogue and diplomatic mediation—a political approach that has garnered widespread support internationally. The spokesperson concluded by asserting that China will continue to uphold President Xi's vision, maintain a fair and just position, and proactively fulfill its obligations as a major global power to ensure permanent peace in the Middle East and the Gulf region.
