Details of the Freeze and Consequences

  • The Decision: Bloomberg News, citing two sources, reported that the Chinese Film Administration halted the approval process for new films from Japan starting last Monday.

  • Affected Films: The regulatory body also suspended the release of six Japanese films that had already been approved and scheduled for screening.

  • Impact: These steps show that tensions between the two neighbors have extended to the cultural sector, raising economic concerns for Tokyo.

The Political Background

The film freeze came after a statement by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who became the first senior Japanese official in decades to publicly link the Taiwan Strait crisis with the possibility of deploying Japanese forces.

  • Attempts at De-escalation: The freeze order was issued one day before Tokyo sent a high-level envoy (Masaki Kanai) to Beijing in an attempt to stabilize relations.

  • Failed Talks: The meeting appeared to do little to ease tensions, as the Director-General of the Asian Affairs Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Liu Jinsong, expressed dissatisfaction with the talks.
