In a major move to streamline its digital economy, Chinese authorities issued on Saturday comprehensive rules to regulate pricing practices on internet platforms. Jointly drafted by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the market regulator, and the cyberspace administration, these rules aim to foster innovation while ensuring a transparent and healthy "platform ecosystem."

Empowering Merchants and Ensuring Fair Competition The regulations provide clear directives to stop platform operators from imposing "unreasonable restrictions" or unjustified conditions on merchants' pricing decisions. By prohibiting platforms from interfering with independent pricing, Beijing aims to protect the autonomy of small and medium-sized businesses and promote a level playing field across the digital landscape.
Transparency for Consumers: Targeting Auto-Renewals and Hidden Fees The rules place a heavy emphasis on consumer protection. Key measures include:
Mandating clear price labeling and transparency in dynamic pricing algorithms.
Regulating "No-password payments" and automatic subscription renewals.
Clamping down on unwanted discounts to protect consumers' right to information and choice.
Effective Date and Self-Audits The new rules will officially take effect on April 10, 2026. Major platform operators will be required to conduct rigorous "self-audits" to ensure full compliance with the new regulatory standards ahead of the implementation date.
