Clarifying the Ambiguity: Cristiano Ronaldo Sets Retirement Timeline at "One or Two Years" and Aims for 2026 World Cup

After days of generating speculation with an ambiguous hint about his imminent retirement, the global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo clarified the true meaning of his statement on Tuesday. He indicated that the word "soon" likely translates to concluding his football career within a period of "one or two years."

من الغموض إلى الوضوح: كريستيانو رونالدو يحدد موعد اعتزاله "قريباً" بين عام وعامين.. ويستهدف مونديال 2026

The Portuguese legend, who boasts an astonishing record of over 950 goals for clubs and his national team, is approaching the conclusion of his long and illustrious career, which began with his debut for Sporting Lisbon in 2002. Ronaldo had previously confirmed in an interview his desire to retire soon to dedicate more time to his family.

Last June, Ronaldo renewed his contract with Saudi club Al Nassr until 2027. The Portuguese striker, who will soon turn 40, is also aiming to participate in the upcoming World Cup, which remains the single major title missing from his trophy-laden cabinet.

During a video call intervention at a global summit on tourism and investment hosted by Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo jokingly explained his hint: "Well, for me, 'soon' could mean within 10 years... No, I'm kidding. I'm really enjoying this moment. And, as you know, in football, when you reach a certain age, you start counting the months very quickly."

Ronaldo elaborated: "I feel very good at this stage. I am scoring goals, I still feel fast and aggressive, and I am enjoying my performance with the National Team. But, let's be honest, when I said 'soon,' I probably meant within one or two years."

Ronaldo indicated that the next World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, would definitely mark the end of his career in major global tournaments. He stated: "Definitely yes, because I will be 41 years old during the tournament." He concluded proudly: "I have given everything to football. I have been part of the game for 25 years, and I have achieved many records, both with clubs and at the national team level. I am very proud. Let's enjoy and live this moment."
