Conference in Beijing Highlights Smart Governance for Mega-Cities

The annual Research Center Conference on Mega-City Governance 2025 opened in Beijing today (Sunday), gathering over 200 experts and city managers from home and abroad to discuss ways to achieve a better urban life through smart governance.

Conference Themes and China's Pioneering Experience


The conference focused on vital topics for the urban future, including digital transformation, sustainable development, and improved public services. The event was organized by the Xinhua Center for Digital Government Research and the Institute of Digital Government and Digital Governance at Tsinghua University.

Speakers highlighted the importance of the Chinese experience:

  • Xi Jinping's Vision: Fu Hua, President of Xinhua News Agency, noted that General Secretary Xi Jinping's guidance and China's innovative experience provide a "theoretical model and practical foundation" for solving urban governance challenges globally.

  • Beijing's Goal: Yin Yong, Mayor of Beijing, emphasized the city's continuous efforts to enhance the quality of urban governance and provide rapid solutions to meet public needs, aiming to become a "world-class, harmonious, and livable city."

  • Smart Transformation: Qiu Yong, Party Secretary of Tsinghua University, stressed the importance of establishing a smart digital transformation system, promoting low-carbon energy transition for green development, and proactively building resilient and safe cities.


International Praise for Chinese Practices


The governance practices of China's mega-cities received praise from foreign experts:

  • United Nations: Zhu Jiewei Wang, Director of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, stated that Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, have sought to achieve harmony between nature and humanity in sustainable urban planning, offering "inspiring models for the world."
