Egypt maintains lead with win over Mauritania

Egypt maintained its lead in Group C of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Morocco with a 2-0 win over Mauritania.

The match ended in a goalless draw in the first half, with Egypt attacking and Mauritania defending.


In the 69th minute of the second half, Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” raised his goal tally for Egypt to 21 goals with a powerful shot after the ball rebounded from the Mauritanian defense.


Ten minutes later, in the 79th minute, Mohamed Salah scored a goal from a perfect cross from left-back Mohamed Hamdy


Salah scored his 57th goal in 101 matches with the Egyptian national team, 11 goals behind Hossam Hassan’s tally of 68 goals.


The result puts Egypt at the top of the group with nine points, while Mauritania’s tally froze at 3 points, tied with Cape Verde and Botswana.


Egypt has taken a big step towards securing qualification to the continental finals, with the top two teams from each group qualifying. The two teams will meet again in the fourth round match on Tuesday in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, and the Pharaohs need just one point to officially secure qualification.
