Egypt's National Elections Authority (NEA) announced on Tuesday the annulment of the results of the parliamentary elections in a number of districts in the first phase, following reports of irregularities in the voting and counting process.

Details of the Annulment and Re-Voting

The head of the NEA, Hazem Badawy, stated that the decision was made due to "fundamental flaws that affected the voting and counting process in some districts." Consequently:

  • Annulment: The NEA decided to invalidate the elections in 19 districts for individual seats across seven governorates and cancel their results.

  • New Date: Re-voting will take place in these districts at a later date.

President Sisi's Call for Scrutiny and Transparency

The NEA's decision follows a call made by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday, urging the authority not to hesitate to partially or fully cancel the voting results for individual seats in the first round if the "genuine will" of the voters could not be ascertained.

  • President’s Message: Sisi emphasized the NEA's independence in resolving complaints and urged it to enhance "the transparency of procedures" to ensure that Parliament members genuinely represent the Egyptian people.

  • Combating Violations: Sisi also requested the NEA to publicly announce the measures taken regarding violations in electoral campaigns to ensure effective control and prevent recurrence in subsequent rounds.

Election Context

The first round of the House of Representatives elections (the legislative chamber) took place on November 10 and 11 in 14 governorates, involving both closed party lists and individual seats. The second and final phase of the elections is scheduled for November 24 and 25 in 13 governorates.
