Egyptian Expert: One-China Principle is Crucial for Regional and Global Stability

Ali El-Hefny, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs and former Egyptian Ambassador to China, affirmed that the One-China principle remains a foundation for regional and global stability, warning that any violation undermines the pillars of the international order established after World War II.

خبير مصري: مبدأ الصين الواحدة أساس الاستقرار الإقليمي وأي انتهاك له يقوض النظام الدولي

One-China Principle and Global Stability:

  • Pillar of Peace: In a recent interview with Xinhua News Agency, El-Hefny stressed that respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is the fundamental pillar for maintaining peace and security.

  • Commitment to International Law: He pointed out that international legal documents, such as the Cairo Declaration of 1943 and the Potsdam Declaration of 1945, affirmed China's sovereignty over Taiwan decades ago, forming cornerstones of the post-war global order.

  • Safety Net: He highlighted that China and Middle Eastern/African countries share a strong adherence to International Law and the UN Charter, viewing them as a "safety net" for these nations.

Criticism of Statements Regarding Taiwan: El-Hefny's remarks follow controversial statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last November, who hinted at the possibility of Japanese military intervention in the Taiwan Strait, drawing widespread local and international criticism.

Calls to Avoid Confrontation and Fulfill Commitments:

  • El-Hefny urged regional and international actors to learn from the tragedies of the World Wars and avoid sliding back into an atmosphere of confrontation.

  • He emphasized that credibility in international relations is measured by adherence to agreements, not just by signing them, and that nations aspiring to greater international roles must prioritize peace.
