Beijing Affirms Sovereignty and Threatens Retaliation

A spokesperson for the Chinese People's Liberation Army's Southern Theater Command confirmed that its forces conducted "routine" patrols in the area on Sunday. The spokesperson added that the Philippines must "immediately stop instigating incidents and escalating tensions." He stressed that Chinese forces will continue to defend the country's sovereignty in this vital maritime region.

Background of the Historical Dispute

China claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, a strategic waterway through which more than three trillion dollars in trade passes annually. Beijing's claims conflict with similar claims from other countries, including the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These conflicting claims are a major source of regional tensions.
