Gabon Corruption Probe: Former Tourism Minister Jailed Over 10 Billion CFA Franc Scandal

Gabon’s judicial authorities have ordered the detention of former Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Pascal Ogowe Siffon, at the Libreville Central Prison. Following a grueling 20-hour interrogation session that concluded this Thursday, the former official was transferred under heavy guard to await trial. Siffon faces grave charges of embezzling over 10 billion CFA francs—public funds that were strategically allocated for tourism development and the promotion of the nation’s craft industries.

Investigators revealed that the suspicious funds originated from the state budget, hotel revenues under government guardianship, and investment allocations. The case has wider implications, as 16 other individuals, including senior members of Siffon’s ministerial office, are also implicated in these major financial irregularities. This high-profile arrest marks a significant moment in Gabon’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, highlighting the government’s commitment to transparency and the protection of national resources earmarked for economic diversification.
