German Chancellor Merz in Davos: The Era of "Great Power Politics" is Here, and Europe Must Adapt to a World of Might

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a sobering speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, declaring that the era of idealistic international order has been replaced by "Great Power Politics." Merz argued that the Russian invasion of Ukraine, coupled with China's rise and shifting U.S. foreign policy, has ushered in a "dangerous and uncomfortable" world where power and toughness prevail over international norms.

Merz urged European nations to adopt a "stern realism" and accelerate their adaptation to this new global power balance. He warned that in a world where only might is respected, small and medium-sized powers are at the greatest risk, necessitating a clear and hardened strategic path for Europe to ensure its survival among competing superpowers.
