The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) announced on Thursday, April 23, 2026, a significant surge in new car registrations for March, with sales climbing 12.5% year-on-year to reach 1.158 million units. This robust growth is primarily attributed to the soaring demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, signaling a decisive shift in the continent’s automotive landscape.

EVs Outpace Traditional Fuels Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) led the market expansion with a staggering 49% increase compared to last year. Plug-in hybrids and hybrid-electrics also saw double-digit growth (28% and 20% respectively). Conversely, traditional internal combustion engines faced a sharp decline: gasoline sales dropped by 9.4%, and diesel plummeted by 12.3%, reflecting a clear transition away from fossil-fuel-dependent transportation.
Quarterly Outlook This strong March performance pushed total registrations for the first quarter of 2026 up by 4%. Experts suggest that the heightened focus on energy security and environmental regulations continues to accelerate the adoption of "green" vehicles, even as traditional automotive sectors face structural challenges.
