Imane Khelif Denies Retiring from Boxing Over Gender Verification Tests

Algerian Olympic champion Imane Khelif has emphatically denied rumors of her retirement from boxing, affirming her "commitment to her athletic career." This denial comes in response to reports in French media, which she stated were based on "false and malicious" statements.

In an official post on her Facebook page, Khelif clarified that the news about her retirement is "incorrect" and based on statements from a person who "no longer represents her in any way," accusing him of "betraying trust and the nation." She emphasized that she has never announced her retirement and remains "committed to my athletic career," training regularly in Algeria and Qatar in preparation for upcoming events.

Khelif believes these rumors are intended to "disrupt and harm" her athletic and professional journey, asserting that she will remain "loyal to the sport of boxing and to my country Algeria," and that this false news will not deter her from continuing to represent her country and honor it in international forums. She also thanked everyone who has supported her, confirming that her career "continues, God willing."

These developments occur as Khelif faces a wave of rumors since the World Boxing Federation announced its decision to mandate gender verification tests for all athletes before they are allowed to compete in any of its events. This measure, which came into effect on Wednesday, aims to "ensure fairness and equal opportunities" and "maintain the safety of participants."

This new rule was implemented after the International Olympic Committee re-recognized the International Boxing Association, officially tasking it with organizing boxing competitions at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
