New York City Mayor-elect, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, has begun forming his new administration, announcing an all-female team to lead what The Guardian calls "the most ambitious political platform the city has seen in a generation." Mamdani is set to take office on January 1st.

Key Members of the All-Female Leadership Team
Mamdani (34) revealed the team led by Ilana Leopold as Executive Director, with the co-chairmanship including prominent figures such as:
Maria Torres-Springer: Former First Deputy Mayor.
Lina Khan: Former Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (under Joe Biden), known for her aggressive enforcement of antitrust laws.
Grace Bonilla: President and CEO of United Way.
Melanie Hartzog: Former Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services.
Mamdani's Ambitious Plan and Promises
Competence and Integrity: Mamdani told reporters: "We will build an administration that is competent and compassionate, driven by integrity, and ready to work just as hard as the millions of New Yorkers who call this city home."
Core Promises: His bold progressive platform includes: rent freezes on stabilized apartments, free bus service, universal childcare, and city-run grocery stores.
Funding: These initiatives will be financed by raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy. His campaign broke fundraising records from small donors, collecting over $20 million.
Challenges from Arch-Rival (Trump)
Federal Funding Threat: The new administration faces a direct threat from US President Donald Trump, Mamdani's arch-rival, who warned via Truth Social that he is "highly unlikely to contribute Federal Money, beyond the minimum required" to New York.
Scale of Federal Funding: NYC's budget for FY 2026 includes about $7.4 billion in federal funding (6.4% of total spending).
Historic Achievements: Mamdani is the city's first Muslim Mayor, first of South Asian descent, first born in Africa, and the youngest Mayor in over a century.
