In a notable political and economic development, President Donald Trump issued a sharp comment today, Thursday, regarding Canada's intention to officially recognize a Palestinian state in September 2025. This announcement was made by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who stated that his country would take this step during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump expressed his displeasure with Canada's decision in a post on his "Truth Social" platform, stating: "Yah! Canada just announced they are supporting a State for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a trade deal with them.. Oh Canada!!" These words carry a subtle warning of potential negative impacts on trade relations between the United States and Canada, especially as Trump's comment came just one day before higher tariffs are set to be imposed on countries that have not signed a trade agreement with the United States.
According to details, Canada will face 35% tariffs on most goods it sells to the United States starting Friday if no trade agreement is reached today, Thursday. This places significant economic pressure on Ottawa, directly linking its foreign policy with its trade issues with its largest trading partner.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously clarified in his statement that his country's decision to recognize a Palestinian state is an independent one, based on the Palestinian Authority's commitment to implementing essential reforms. These reforms include Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's pledge to undertake radical governance reform, hold general elections in 2026 excluding Hamas, and disarm the future Palestinian state.
Carney noted that "the movement of other countries was important" in making this decision, emphasizing that Canada makes "foreign policy decisions independently, and when we see an opportunity and the potential to influence... the two-state solution had been declining recently." The Canadian Prime Minister also sharply criticized Israel's actions in his statement, which, he said, exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, highlighting a humanitarian and ethical dimension to Canada's decision.
