Paris Summons U.S. Ambassador: Dérancq Murder Sparks Trilateral Crisis Between France, U.S., and Italy

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced Sunday he will summon U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner following a controversial statement by the U.S. Embassy regarding the death of right-wing activist Quentin Dérancq. The Embassy had linked the murder to "rising violent left-wing extremism," a move Paris condemned as "unacceptable foreign interference" and "political exploitation" of a judicial matter. Barrot firmly stated that France does not need "lessons in violence" from "reactionary movements" on the international stage.

The fallout adds a third dimension to an already bitter row between France and Italy. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and FM Antonio Tajani had previously described the incident as an "ideological wound for Europe," drawing parallels to Italy’s violent "Years of Lead." President Emmanuel Macron responded by telling nationalists to "stay in their own homes," highlighting a profound 2026 ideological rift between France’s centrist government and the surging right-wing administrations in Washington and Rome.
