China Launches Large-Scale Drills Around Taiwan to Deter "External Interference"

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) commenced major joint military exercises around Taiwan this Monday, dubbed "Justice Mission 2025." Described by Beijing as a "stern warning" against separatist forces, the drills involve maritime and aerial combat readiness patrols across the Taiwan Strait and all cardinal directions surrounding the island. This escalation follows provocative remarks from Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding potential military intervention and Washington’s announcement of a record-breaking $10 billion arms package for Taipei.

Navy Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command, stated that the maneuvers focus on "joint control of comprehensive superiority" and enforcing blockades on key ports. While the PLA’s statement did not explicitly name Japan, the timing aligns with Beijing’s recent sanctions on 20 U.S. defense firms. As the largest military aid package in U.S.-Taiwan history awaits Congressional approval, China maintains that these drills are a "legitimate and necessary measure" to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
