Something that calls for breakthroughs in the development of future industries

Beijing, January , 2026 (Xinhua) -- Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed the need to make efforts to leverage the country's comparative advantages, strive for progress while maintaining stability, and promote continuous breakthroughs in the development of future industries.

Xi made these remarks while chairing a group study session of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on January 30.

He pointed out that cultivating and developing future industries is of paramount importance for gaining a competitive edge in science, technology, and industry, as well as for taking the lead in development. It is also essential for developing a modern, high-quality productive force, building a modern industrial system, improving people's living standards, and promoting comprehensive human development and overall social progress.

He stressed that future industries are characterized by vision, strategic importance and disruptive innovation potential, and require scientific planning and comprehensive coordination, calling for efforts to promote industrial synergy to ensure that future industries, emerging industries and traditional industries complement and reinforce each other.

Xi pointed out that the extent of scientific and technological breakthroughs largely determines the speed, breadth, and depth of development of future industries.

He said that the advantages of the new system should be fully utilized to mobilize resources at the national level; efforts should be intensified to achieve breakthroughs in basic technologies in key areas; strategic, forward-looking and systematic planning of basic research should be strengthened; and the application and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements should be accelerated.

Xi added that we must give companies a full role, promote the concentration of various innovation resources within them, and work vigorously to develop leading technology companies and high-tech companies with strong core technologies and solid innovation capabilities.

He stressed the need to improve fiscal and tax policies; to strongly develop scientific and technological funding; to nurture, attract and utilize talent comprehensively; and to create a vibrant environment that encourages innovation throughout society.

Xi stressed the need to ensure development and security are achieved simultaneously, and to explore scientific and effective regulatory approaches to prevent related risks. He called for deepening international cooperation and actively promoting the joint development of standards, cooperation in setting rules, and coordinated industrial progress.
