Strengthening the Command: Xi Jinping Promotes Commanders of Eastern and Central Theaters to General

In a significant reinforcement of China’s military leadership, President Xi Jinping, acting in his capacity as Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), officially promoted two senior officers to the rank of General, the highest active-duty rank in the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The newly promoted generals are Yang Zhibin, Commander of the Eastern Theater Command—a strategic hub overseeing the Taiwan Strait and Pacific interests—and Han Shengyan, Commander of the Central Theater Command, which is vital for the defense of Beijing and regional stability. This move highlights President Xi’s ongoing efforts to consolidate a loyal and highly experienced military elite at the helm of China’s most critical operational zones.

The formal ceremony, held in Beijing this Monday, was a high-profile military event where Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the CMC, announced the promotion orders signed by Xi. The ceremony was presided over by Zhang Shengmin, another vice chairman of the commission. Following the official reading, President Xi personally congratulated the officers, underscoring the prestige of the rank and the gravity of their responsibilities. These promotions serve as a clear signal of China’s commitment to military modernization and strategic readiness, ensuring that its most vital theater commands are led by officers of the highest caliber during a period of increasing regional and global complexity.
