In a dramatic escalation of tensions between the world’s two largest economies, U.S. President Donald Trump firmly declared that the United States and China are "effectively" entrenched in a fierce trade war. This declaration was made ahead of his expected meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.

Trump emphasized that tariffs have become a critical tool for safeguarding U.S. national security, noting the imposition of 100% tariffs on Chinese imports as an urgent necessity to protect American interests amid mounting Chinese escalation. He highlighted America’s soaring debt, which has now reached $37 trillion, as a further impetus for decisive action.
Meanwhile, China announced its readiness to "fight to the end" unless negotiations advance, defending its decision to halt purchases of American soybeans as a defensive maneuver against what it called "American hypocrisy" in trade restrictions. Beijing also ramped up export controls on rare earth metals, while Washington continued to retaliate with new tariffs on Chinese ships and goods.
Despite the mutual escalation, both sides maintain the possibility of negotiation. U.S. officials express hope for a landmark Trump-Xi summit, aiming to defuse the trade conflict that threatens global supply chains and the stability of the international economy.
