The Algorithm Summit: Trump and Xi to Negotiate AI Supremacy Amid Industrial Espionage Allegations

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Washington and Beijing are considering launching formal bilateral talks on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This strategic dialogue is expected to be a cornerstone of the upcoming summit in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Leading the American delegation will be Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, signaling that the U.S. views AI not just as a security issue, but as a vital economic frontier.

IP Theft and Global Leadership The proposed talks follow a period of heightened friction. Last month, the Financial Times reported that the White House accused China of orchestrating the theft of intellectual property from American AI labs on an "industrial scale." This claim, backed by a memo from Michael Kratsios (Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy), has prompted the administration to warn of severe countermeasures. President Trump recently asserted that he intends to remind President Xi of America's undisputed dominance in AI as the two nations attempt to manage their volatile trade and tech relations.

The Strategy Index: Mapping the Divide Data from the "AI Strategic Capabilities Index" by KPMG and Oxford Economics highlights the current disparity. The United States leads the world with 75.2 points out of 100, driven by the rapid integration of AI into daily business operations and a robust scientific research ecosystem. In contrast, China holds 48.2 points, finding its strength in AI patent filings and its control over key computing components. While Europe maintains a slight edge over China, the upcoming "Trump-Xi" talks will likely dictate the future of global AI governance and the protection of high-tech innovation.
