On Monday, the Israeli Knesset witnessed one of its most divisive and controversial sessions in years when two prominent members of the Joint List loudly interrupted US President Donald Trump’s speech. In a dramatic move, MKs Ayman Odeh and Ofer Cassif raised a banner reading “Recognize Palestine,” sending a bold and unequivocal message rejecting the Israeli government’s policies and Trump’s peace plan, which includes controversial arrangements regarding Gaza.

This daring protest sparked immediate tension and a physical altercation within the chamber as the Knesset Speaker tried to restore order amidst escalating chaos broadcast live. Security swiftly intervened, escorting the two MKs from the hall as some attendees applauded in support, with cameras focusing on the now-famous banner that ignited a media frenzy.
While some Israeli sources claimed the banner denounced genocide, MK Odeh clarified on his account on X that its message was solely: “Recognize Palestine,” underscoring a commitment to justice for the Palestinian cause.
President Trump responded with a smirk, praising security’s prompt reaction, which added a sardonic tone to the room before he resumed his speech with words of praise for his adviser.
The division was not limited to the Arab members; two right-wing MKs had already announced a boycott of the session, objecting to what they deemed a deal “weakening Israel” as part of the US peace initiative. Thus, the parliamentary session became a battleground reflecting the region’s volatile politics and the enduring hope of the Palestinian people.
