A major rescue operation is underway in the Swiss Alps after a passenger train derailed near Goppenstein around 7:00 AM on Monday. The train, traveling from Spiez to Brig, was struck by an avalanche, causing it to jump the tracks. Local police in the canton of Valais confirmed that injuries are "likely," and early reports from the Daily Mail suggest approximately 80 people were on board at the time of the incident.

Rail services between Goppenstein and Brig have been completely suspended as heavy snow continues to hamper recovery efforts. The region had been placed under high avalanche alert following extreme weather conditions last week. Emergency teams, including mountain rescue units and helicopters, are working to reach the site, though the risk of secondary avalanches remains a primary concern for the responders.
