The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday, May 14, 2026, that its "Southern Group" of forces has successfully taken full control of the town of Mykolaivka in the Donetsk People's Republic. This advancement marks a significant tactical shift in the Donbas region, described by Moscow as the result of "decisive operations" aimed at consolidating Russian territorial gains in the east.

Retaliatory Strikes and the Use of Hypersonic Weaponry Accompanying the territorial advance, Russia launched a wide-scale coordinated strike targeting Ukraine's critical infrastructure. The Ministry characterized these maneuvers as a direct response to Ukrainian "terrorist attacks" on Russian civilian targets. The assault utilized high-precision long-range weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and attack drones. The primary targets included energy and transport facilities, long-range drone storage depots, and fuel and lubricant warehouses utilized by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to the Russian statement, all designated targets were successfully neutralized.
Ukrainian Air Defense and Civilian Impact Conversely, the Ukrainian Air Force reported an unprecedented aerial onslaught, stating that Russia deployed 56 ballistic and cruise missiles alongside 675 drones. While Kyiv claimed to have intercepted a significant majority of these threats, the aftermath in the capital remains dire. Emergency crews in Kyiv reported a partial collapse of a residential building, resulting in at least 40 injuries and the destruction of 18 apartments. Search and rescue operations continue as teams work to reach survivors trapped under the rubble.
