According to a report by Politico on Thursday, February 26, 2026, senior Pentagon officials and lawmakers are sounding the alarm over the rapid depletion of advanced interceptors like the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) and Patriot systems. The warnings suggest that a sustained military campaign against Iran could leave U.S. personnel in the region vulnerable, as stockpiles have already been strained by recent high-intensity operations and defense commitments.

While the Defense Department maintains its overall readiness, members of Congress are concerned that a "long war" in the Middle East would compromise U.S. deterrence against China. In response, the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) has authorized multi-year procurement contracts to boost production cycles. However, experts warn that replacing these complex weapons takes years, not months, creating a "strategic window of vulnerability."
