Aoun Comments on Suburb Strike, Calls for International Intervention to Stop Israel

Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun stated that Israel's targeting of the Southern Suburb of Beirut on Sunday, coinciding with Lebanon's Independence Day, serves as "additional proof" that it disregards repeated calls to cease its aggression and refuses to implement international resolutions.

Aoun's Call to the International Community

  • Lebanon's Commitment: Aoun emphasized that Lebanon has been committed to a cessation of hostilities for about a year and has repeatedly offered initiatives.

  • The Demand: He renewed his call for the international community to "shoulder its responsibilities and intervene strongly and seriously to stop the aggression against Lebanon and its people," to prevent further deterioration and bloodshed.

Strike Details and US Response

  • Casualties: The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that the airstrike on the Haret Hreik area resulted in the initial toll of one person killed and 21 others injured.

  • Israeli Target: The strike followed the Israeli army's announcement that it targeted "Hezbollah's chief of staff," the prominent commander Ali Tabtabaei, in what is considered the group's most secure area.

  • US Position: A senior US official noted that Israel did not inform Washington beforehand of the operation, only briefing them after execution, despite the US administration being aware that Tel Aviv was preparing for escalation.
