In a significant and escalating strategic move, the United States and its allies in the Pacific region have deployed a large number of aircraft carriers and advanced F-35 fighter jets in close proximity to China. According to The New York Times, this military action, which includes key allies such as Australia, Japan, and South Korea, is a central part of a broader US strategy to contain China's growing military influence in the region.

The US Indo-Pacific Command, headquartered in Hawaii, stated that the deployment of the F-35 fighters aims to "enhance interoperability and strengthen the unified combat power of the United States and its allies." These jets, known for their superior stealth technology and advanced sensor suites, enable rapid information sharing among various platforms and command centers, thereby improving coordination and effectiveness in joint operations.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Washington expressed deep concern, warning that the deployment of offensive American weapons near China could turn the region into a "powder keg." The embassy urged Washington to respect Beijing's security concerns and cease undermining regional peace and stability, reflecting the escalating tensions between the great powers in this vital area.
Map of US and Allied Air Power Deployment
Japan: Japan is a key US base in the region, hosting important airbases like Iwakuni Air Base, which houses a fleet of F-35 jets of the "B" and "C" variants. Japan is also set to receive 48 F-35 "A" fighters at Misawa Air Base to replace its F-15 fleet. It is worth noting that Japan holds the largest foreign fleet of F-35s, having ordered 147 jets, making it the program's largest customer.
Korean Peninsula: South Korea has ordered 60 F-35 "A" fighters and has so far received 40, all of which are stationed at the Cheongju Air Base. Seoul plans to establish a second base in response to continuous threats from North Korea.
Australia: Australia is the only country in the Southern Hemisphere to own American F-35 fighters, having acquired 72 of the "A" variant.
F-35 Fighters: Technological Superiority
The F-35 fighters, developed by the American company Lockheed Martin, are a symbol of technological superiority. According to Indo-Pacific Command spokesperson Chloe Morgan, these aircraft feature stealth technology and an advanced sensor suite that enables them to quickly share information with other platforms and command centers. The company has developed three main variants:
F-35 "A": The most common variant, used for conventional takeoffs and landings.
F-35 "B": Known for its short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, making it suitable for operations from ships without full runways.
F-35 "C": Specifically designed for carrier-based operations.
More than 1,215 fighters have been delivered to 20 countries worldwide, operating from 37 airbases and 12 naval vessels. Newsweek magazine points out that Washington seeks to expand the deployment of these fighters in the Western Pacific to counter China's growing air power, with Singapore preparing to become the next operator in the region by purchasing 12 jets.
