Burhan’s Government Studying US Proposal to Halt Sudan War

The government of the Sudanese Army Commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is currently studying a US proposal for a ceasefire in Sudan, a government source told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Tuesday.

Proposal Details and Diplomatic Moves


  • Defense Council Meeting: The source, who requested anonymity, stated that the "Security and Defense Council will hold a meeting today (Tuesday) to discuss the American truce proposal."

  • Preliminary Agreement and Duration: The day before (Monday), Maasoud Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US President for Middle East Affairs, confirmed that the warring parties, the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), had preliminarily agreed to a humanitarian truce lasting 3 months.

  • The Quartet Plan: This truce is based on a plan put forward by the Quartet Group, comprising the UAE, the US, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, announced on September 12.

  • Logistical Discussions: Boulos, speaking from Cairo, explained that technical and logistical discussions are ongoing before the final signing of the truce, noting that representatives from both sides have been in Washington to discuss the details.

  • Opportunity to End the Crisis: Boulos added that the truce proposal represents a "real opportunity to end the crisis," confirming that the Army and the RSF are engaged in discussing a peace paper presented by the US with the Quartet's support.
