Details of Maduro's Trial and His Imprisonment in New York

Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been placed in a major federal prison in New York City after arriving at Stewart Air National Guard Base on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Under heavy security and escorted by FBI and DEA agents, Maduro was transported to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, a facility notorious for its harsh conditions and described by some as "hell on earth." He is currently held in a high-security special cell.

Legal Proceedings and Charges: Maduro faces severe charges in the Southern District of New York, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine trafficking, and possession of heavy weapons.

  • Defense Lawyer: In his first procedural hearing, Maduro will be asked to enter a plea. If he cannot afford a private lawyer due to his frozen assets, the court will appoint a public defender to ensure the legal process is followed.

  • Bail: Given the nature of the charges and his status as a high flight risk, bail is extremely unlikely to be granted.

  • UN Meeting: The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency session on Monday, requested by Colombia with support from Russia and China, to discuss the U.S. military operation in Venezuela.
