In a major shift in foreign policy, the Lebanese government announced on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, that it has withdrawn the accreditation of the designated Iranian Ambassador, Mohammad-Reza Shibani. Shibani was declared "persona non grata" and given until next Sunday to leave the country. Simultaneously, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled its ambassador to Tehran, Ahmad Soueidan, for consultations, citing Tehran’s violation of diplomatic norms.

Israel welcomed the decision immediately. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar described Lebanon's move as "justified and necessary" against a state responsible for violating Lebanese sovereignty via Hezbollah. Sa'ar further urged the Lebanese government to take "practical measures" against the group on the ground to fully restore national independence.
