As the Sharm El-Sheikh summit for peace in Gaza nears, anticipation and division mark the political scene between Israel and Hamas, amid conflicting statements and contentious issues that threaten any chance for lasting stability in the Gaza Strip. These developments unfold following a devastating two-year war, whose repercussions still cast a shadow on the region, despite determined international efforts for lasting settlement.

Hamas’ Position: Escalation and Warnings
Hamas has clearly refused to attend the official signing ceremony of the expected agreement to end the war, stating that only mediators, along with American and Israeli officials, will be present. Hamas leaders rejected any suggestion of forced departures for its leaders from Gaza, asserting that no power could compel Palestinians to leave their homeland. The movement also emphasized its readiness to respond firmly to any renewed Israeli aggression, insisting that the issue of disarmament remains "off the table" and non-negotiable.
Israel’s Stance: Continued Pressure and Assertion of Control
Conversely, Israeli officials issued strong statements ahead of the summit. The Israeli defense minister pledged to destroy all tunnel infrastructure in Gaza after the release of hostages, under international mechanisms led by the US. The Israeli prime minister reaffirmed that Israeli forces would remain in the Strip to maintain pressure on Hamas for complete disarmament, noting that Hamas agreed to the deal under dire pressure.
Furthermore, article 16 of the American peace plan, known as the "Deal of the Century," stipulates that Israel will neither annex nor directly occupy Gaza, with a stabilization force overseeing the situation. Any Israeli military withdrawal will depend on benchmarks and timelines associated with the disarmament progress.
Sharm El-Sheikh Summit: A Test of International Resolve
Egypt hosts over 20 world leaders in Sharm El-Sheikh, aiming for a lasting solution to the Gaza conflict. The summit raises hopes for comprehensive reconciliation to end the bloodshed and destruction in the Strip, despite a challenging and skeptical environment. Its significance lies in bringing opposing parties together under Egyptian and international sponsorship, hoping for a real breakthrough on the road to peace.
