"European Union: Recognition of Palestine Supports the Two-State Solution"

In a significant diplomatic move, a spokesperson for the European Union affirmed on Tuesday that recognizing a Palestinian state helps support the two-state solution. The EU spokesperson, speaking to Al Arabiya/Al Hadath, stated that the union is committed to a just and comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"الاتحاد الأوروبي يؤكد: الاعتراف بفلسطين خطوة حاسمة لدعم حل الدولتين"

Anwar Al-Anani, the spokesperson for the European Commission, made a clear declaration: "Our position is clear; there is no solution other than the two-state solution: an Israeli state alongside an independent, democratic, geographically contiguous, and viable Palestinian state, living in peace and security, based on mutual recognition with Jerusalem as the future capital of both states." He also stressed that the EU will continue its efforts to reach a unified European position based on this solution.

These statements come amid growing international momentum for the Palestinian cause. On Tuesday, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced on the platform "X" that his country would recognize the state of Palestine during the UN General Assembly meetings in New York this September. He also indicated Brussels' intention to impose "strict sanctions" on Israel.

This follows an announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron in late July that France would also recognize Palestine during the UN General Assembly meetings, scheduled from September 9 to 23. Since then, more than a dozen Western countries have declared their intention to follow suit, reflecting a major shift in the European stance on the Palestinian issue.

This diplomatic momentum follows a high-level international conference on a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. The conference, held at the UN headquarters in New York on July 28 and 29, concluded with a final document adopted by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The document aims to enshrine solutions for establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.
