France: Court Approves Early Release of Nicolas Sarkozy After 20 Days in Prison

The Court of Appeal in Paris ruled on Monday to approve the request for the early release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, following about twenty days served in prison for the "Libyan funding" case related to his 2007 election campaign.

Release Conditions: The Court stated that Sarkozy's temporary release would be subject to strict judicial supervision.

  • Restrictions: Sources revealed that Sarkozy will be prohibited from communicating with any official in the Ministry of Justice.

Focus Shifts to the Appeal

  • Next Step: One of Sarkozy's lawyers commented that the decision is a "natural application of the law," noting that their focus will now shift to preparing for the appeal hearing scheduled for 2026.

  • Case Status: Sarkozy had begun serving a 5-year sentence last month before his lawyers submitted a request for his conditional release.
