The Global Resilience Flotilla (أسطول الصمود العالمي), an international coalition committed to breaking the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, has announced its imminent arrival, stating on Sunday that it is now only about 825 kilometres from the Palestinian territory. This massive humanitarian mission comprises over 50 boats carrying hundreds of activists from 44 nations, united in their objective to deliver aid and challenge the legality of the ongoing siege.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the flotilla is a joint effort bringing together key organizations such as the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Gaza Global March, the Resilience Convoy, and the Malaysian organization Samudera Nusantara (صمود نوسانتارا), highlighting the wide-reaching nature of the initiative.
Despite continuous threats, the activists remain resolute. Suspicious activities have been reported near the vessels; an activist aboard the boat "Alma" posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) confirming that Israeli drones had been observed flying low over the flotilla's boats the previous night, though no direct attack occurred. More alarmingly, participant Yousef Sammour told the BBC that their boat was subjected to a drone attack where "strange materials" dropped directly outside their vessel, with some touching his face and causing a 30-second irritation before he managed to wash it off. These incidents underscore the palpable tension and risks facing the mission.
In related news, the prominent French actress and activist Adèle Haenel announced on Saturday that she was forced to leave the flotilla due to a technical failure in the engine of her boat. Haenel, who had sailed from Tunisia on September 5th as part of what is billed as the "world's largest naval mission" to break the siege, expressed regret on Instagram for not being able to complete the journey. Crucially, she reiterated her urgent call for global governments to be pressured to "end the genocide" in Gaza, stressing that the priority remains enabling her comrades to deliver humanitarian aid and successfully break the blockade. The flotilla had previously reported a similar technical breakdown involving the "Family Boat", which necessitated reallocating its passengers, including French MP Rima Hassan from the La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party.
Ongoing Attacks and a Dire Humanitarian Toll in Gaza
As the flotilla approaches, the intensity of the conflict continues to ravage Gaza. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Israeli military operations over the preceding 24 hours resulted in the deaths of 79 Palestinians and injuries to 379 others. This grim tally raises the total casualties since the war began on October 7, 2023, to 66,005 fatalities and 168,162 wounded.
The Ministry noted that six of the recent fatalities were "martyrs of aid" or "martyrs of livelihood," pushing the total number of victims of the humanitarian crisis recorded in Gaza hospitals to 2,566 deaths and over 18,769 injuries. Furthermore, the Ministry stressed that a substantial number of victims remain "under the rubble and in the streets," inaccessible to ambulance and civil defence crews due to ongoing Israeli bombardment and restrictions. Medical sources confirmed casualties reaching multiple hospitals, including Al-Shifa, Al-Ahli Arab (Baptist), Al-Awda, Nasser, and Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Hospital.
Mass Protests in Israel Demand End to War and Hostage Return
Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, thousands of Israelis staged a massive demonstration on Saturday evening, demanding a comprehensive agreement to end the war in the Gaza Strip. The protest comes just two days before the scheduled meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump in Washington.
Gathering at the "Hostages Square," demonstrators held a large banner unequivocally stating: "All the Hostages, Bring Them Home Now." Lishay Meran-Lavi, wife of the captive Omri Meran, delivered an impassioned plea, declaring that the only way to prevent a "slide into the abyss" is a "full and comprehensive deal that ends the war and returns all the hostages and soldiers." She directly appealed to the US President to use his "influence on Prime Minister Netanyahu," cautioning that "prolonging this war will only expose Omri and the other hostages to greater danger."
Ronen Ohl, whose brother is also held in Gaza, similarly urged Netanyahu to make the decisive choice to "reach a ceasefire agreement" immediately. "No messages, no statements, no delays. There is an opportunity now, there is a time when you can choose to be a leader," he stressed.
However, Netanyahu faces counter-pressure from his far-right ally, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who warned the Prime Minister on X that he "does not have a mandate to end the war without completely defeating Hamas." Netanyahu, having lost his absolute majority in the parliament, relies heavily on these far-right partners who oppose any hostage deal with Hamas and advocate for the continuation of the war until the movement is fully eradicated.
