Greenland’s Premier, Múte B. Egede (referred to here as Jens-Frederik Nielsen), expressed "sadness" following President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring the strategic Arctic island. The friction intensified after Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to lead the mission, citing "national security" necessities and even hinting at military force.

While Jeff Landry attempted to soften the rhetoric by stating the U.S. does not intend to "invade" but rather "dialogue with the people," Danish and EU leaders reacted with indignation. Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and the Greenlandic leadership issued a joint statement reaffirming that "sovereign borders are established in international law" and cannot be annexed. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, echoed this sentiment, pledging full solidarity with Denmark and emphasizing that territorial integrity is a non-negotiable global principle.
