The Hamas movement announced on Tuesday evening that it had found the bodies of two additional hostages in the Gaza Strip, amid a new escalation of violence.

Details of Finding the Bodies and Delivery Delay

  • The Announcement: The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the movement's military wing, stated in a release on its Telegram channel Tuesday evening that they recovered the two bodies and published their names. It was not immediately clear whether the bodies would be handed over to Israel overnight.

  • Previous Delay: Hamas had earlier indicated that it would postpone the delivery of another hostage's body that was previously found, citing the delay as a response to "the occupation’s (Israel’s) violations."

  • Reasons for Delay: The al-Qassam Brigades explained that the first body was found during search operations inside a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, and that new Israeli attacks hinder search operations and the handover of the body.

Israeli Escalation

  • New Strikes: Israel launched new airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, nearly three weeks after the conflict's ceasefire began.

  • Israel's Justification: Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said the government was responding to an attack launched by Hamas against Israeli soldiers, in addition to the delay in handing over the agreed-upon hostage bodies.
