Syrian circles have been captivated in recent days by the news of the first Syrian citizen of Jewish faith running for the People's Council (Parliament) after decades of absence from the political scene. This candidate is Henry Hamra, the son of Youssef Hamra, the Chief Rabbi of Syrian Jews in New York. Henry announced his candidacy for the Damascus representative seat, becoming the first Jewish candidate since 1967. Hamra urged his followers via the "X" platform to use the registration link and vote for him.

Who is Henry Hamra? The Agenda and the Message of Tolerance
Henry Hamra is 48 years old. His father left Syria in 1992 after former President Hafez al-Assad lifted the travel ban on Jewish residents.
Regarding his electoral platform, the Syrian news agency SANA reported that Hamra primarily focuses on supporting economic reconstruction and development and actively seeking the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria, specifically under the Caesar Act. The candidate consistently emphasizes his deep belief in a "unified and tolerant Syria" and has pledged to work with the Syrian community in the United States to achieve these goals.
Hamra detailed on his "X" account that his platform revolves around six key pillars, including:
Strengthening National Identity and Belonging: By supporting cultural and educational initiatives that connect Syrians at home and abroad.
Contributing to Reconstruction and Economic Development: By encouraging Syrian businessmen in the diaspora to invest and create job opportunities for youth.
Establishing the Image of a New Syria: One based on tolerance and religious pluralism.
Protecting Cultural Heritage and Identity: By supporting archaeological sites and places of worship for Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
Supporting Syrian Communities Abroad: And building strong bridges of communication with them.
Promoting Citizenship and Social Justice: By advocating for the rights of all Syrians without discrimination.
The Election as a Step Towards the Future
It is noteworthy that these Syrian elections began today, Sunday, October 5th, to form the first People's Council since the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad's rule on December 8th last year.
Nawar Najmeh, a member and media spokesperson for the Supreme Electoral Committee, affirmed that this election is "a step on a long road to building a homeland worthy of all Syrians and their sacrifices." In a post on "X" today, he delivered a message to citizens: "Your vote is the hope of Syrians." Najmeh clarified to Al Arabiya/Al Hadath that the elections started on schedule at 9:00 AM local time, confirming that "the seats for Sweida, Raqqa, and Al-Hasakah will remain vacant" for now.
