Hezbollah’s Elite Shaken: Israel Eliminates Radwan Force Commander Ahmed Ballout Amid Intense Airstrikes in Lebanon

In a significant escalation that marks the first strike on Beirut’s Southern Suburbs in nearly a month, the Israeli military confirmed on Thursday the assassination of Ahmed Ballout (also known as Malik), the commander of operations for Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement confirming the success of the targeted raid on the Ghobeiry district. The strike is viewed as a strategic decapitation of Hezbollah’s most formidable tactical unit, further straining the fragile ceasefire.

اغتيال في قلب الضاحية: إسرائيل تستهدف النخبة في حزب الله وتتوعد بضربة جديدة لإيران

A Trail of Destruction Beyond the Litani The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that at least 11 people were killed in a series of Israeli raids spanning the south and east of the country. A particularly devastating strike hit the town of Zelaya in the Western Beqaa, killing the town’s mayor and three family members. This attack occurred just moments before the IDF issued evacuation orders for Zelaya and 11 other villages, most of which are located north of the Litani River. Other targeted areas included Ansariyeh, Mazraat Al-Dawoudiyeh, Kawthariyet Al-Siyad, Al-Ghassaniyeh, and Saksakiyeh, highlighting a broadening of the Israeli military theater.

Strategic Posturing and the Iranian Shadow Despite the ceasefire extension until May 17, both sides exchange accusations of violations. While Israel continues systematic demolitions in border towns and enforces the so-called "Yellow Line" buffer zone, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir issued a stern warning from Southern Lebanon. Zamir vowed to seize "every opportunity" to dismantle Hezbollah's capabilities and affirmed that the Israeli military remains fully prepared to launch a new offensive against Iran. This rhetoric, combined with the latest strikes, signals a precarious phase where the regional truce hangs by a thread.
