Iran Puts European Dual National on Trial for Spying for Israel

Iran's judiciary announced today, Monday, that an Iranian citizen holding European nationality, who was arrested during the recent 12-day war with Israel, has been referred to trial on charges of espionage and intelligence cooperation for Israel.

Details of the Case and Arrest:

  • Identity: The judiciary's "Mizan Online" website did not disclose the suspect's identity but stated he is a "dual national living in a European country" and was arrested in Iran during the war in June.

  • Timing: The arrest occurred after Israel launched a large-scale surprise attack on Iran on June 13, which resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian officers and nuclear scientists.

  • Allegations: The accused entered Iran a month before the war. Investigations indicate he was in contact with the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, and was trained as an agent in "several European capitals and the occupied territories."

  • Evidence: "Sophisticated espionage and intelligence equipment was found upon his arrest at the villa where he was staying."

Context:

  • In October, Iran ratified a law increasing penalties for those accused of spying for Israel or the US.
