Economic Collapse and Social Unrest: The protests began in late December 2025 following a sharp devaluation of the Iranian Rial. The unrest initially focused on exchange rate volatility and its impact on wholesale and retail prices, leading to the resignation of Central Bank Governor Mohammad Farzin, who was replaced by Abdolnaser Hemmati. In several cities, the protests turned into violent clashes with police, accompanied by anti-regime slogans.
