Israel Escalates Gaza Assaults Amidst Massive Tel Aviv Hostage Protests

Israel's military forces, utilizing airstrikes and tanks, have intensified their attacks on the eastern and northern outskirts of Gaza City, causing widespread destruction to buildings and homes. These operations come as Israeli leaders pledge to continue their planned offensive on the city, which they have labeled as the "last stronghold of Hamas." Meanwhile, Tel Aviv is bracing for a large-scale demonstration demanding the release of hostages.

Mounting Israeli Military Operations

Residents and eyewitnesses reported continuous explosions throughout the night in areas like Zeitoun, Shujaiya, and Sabra. The Israeli military confirmed that its forces have returned to combat in the Jabaliya area, aiming to dismantle militant tunnels and reinforce control. Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz vowed to continue the offensive, stating that Gaza City would be destroyed unless Hamas agreed to end the war on Israel's terms and release all remaining hostages. This military escalation has created widespread panic, prompting many families to flee the city.

Political Calls and Protests for Hostages' Release

On the domestic front, former Israeli Prime Minister Benny Gantz called for a national unity government with opposition figures to facilitate a hostage deal. This proposal was swiftly criticized by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who dismissed it as a "surrender deal with Hamas." Simultaneously, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv to demand the hostages' release. A much larger demonstration is anticipated on Tuesday, with the "Hostages Families Forum" urging a significant increase in train services to accommodate the expected crowds.

Catastrophic Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen with the ongoing assaults. Medical sources report that the death toll since the start of the war has surpassed 62,000, with the majority being children and women. According to the Palestinian news agency "Wafa," over 2,000 people have died while seeking aid, and the number of fatalities from malnutrition and famine has risen to 289, including 115 children. The UN has officially declared famine in Gaza, a claim Israel has rejected as an "outright lie." In response, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini urged Israel to stop denying the famine it has created.

Global Protests in Support of Palestinians

Internationally, thousands of Australians marched in support of Palestinians, amid strained relations between Australia and Israel. The "Palestine Action" group called for sanctions against Israel, while the Executive Council of Australian Jewry criticized the protests, stating they "created an unsafe environment." These demonstrations follow heightened tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, after Australia announced its intention to recognize a Palestinian state.
