Journalist Quits Reuters in Protest Over Complicit Coverage of Gaza Events

The photojournalist Valerie Zinkerenk, who worked for eight years as a freelance correspondent for Reuters, announced her separation from the agency in protest against what she described as the complicity of Western media in legitimizing and perpetuating the targeting of Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip. In her statement, she noted that her photographic works from the Canadian Prairies had appeared in international newspapers and platforms, but the latest developments led her to make this difficult decision.

The Media's Role in Covering the Conflict

Zinkerenk criticized the editorial policies followed by Reuters, especially after the assassination of Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif and the Al Jazeera crew in Gaza City on August 10. She explained that the agency chose to publish unverified claims issued by Israeli authorities that Al-Sharif was affiliated with Hamas, considering this a repetition of a series of inaccurate information promoted by the media without verification.

Targeting Journalists in Gaza

Zinkerenk pointed out that "double-tap" attacks, where civilian facilities such as hospitals and schools are targeted twice in a row while paramedics and journalists are present, have resulted in the deaths of five additional journalists, including Reuters photographer Hussam Al-Masry. She also stated that the continued re-publication of Israeli claims by Western media without verification has contributed to the systematic targeting of journalists, accusing Western journalistic institutions of bias and a failure to protect local and international journalists..

The Responsibility of Western Media Outlets

Zinkerenk cited statements by prominent journalists, such as Jeremy Scahill of Drop Site News, who accused American and British media outlets of supporting Israeli propaganda narratives and obscuring the facts of humanitarian crimes against civilians and journalists in Gaza. She also highlighted that the number of journalists who have died in Gaza over the past two years exceeds the number of casualties in major wars of the 20th century, emphasizing that the disregard for societal and journalistic responsibility has led to unprecedented humanitarian catastrophes.

Failing Local and International Journalists

Zinkerenk criticized Reuters' failure to defend Anas Al-Sharif despite him having received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his journalistic work. She asserted that the agency did not show support for Palestinian journalists despite the explicit threats they received from Israeli authorities and ignored their calls to the international media seeking protection.

The Decision to Resign and the Message

Zinkerenk concluded her statement by announcing her decision to resign from her work with Reuters, believing that wearing a press card now represents a feeling of shame and sorrow given what journalists are subjected to in Gaza. She emphasized her resolve to direct her future media contributions to serving the causes of persecuted journalists and to immortalize their courage and sacrifices in the field.

While fully committed to neutrality and objectivity, this statement reflects the journalist's perspective and the reality of the media and political challenges facing Western journalistic institutions in covering the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
