U.S. President Donald Trump intensified his war of words with Tehran on Sunday, March 15, 2026, threatening additional airstrikes on Kharg Island, Iran's vital oil export hub. In a blunt interview with NBC News, Trump claimed that U.S. forces had "totally demolished" military installations on the island, adding provocatively: "We may hit it a few more times just for fun."

Sidelining Diplomacy and Securing the Strait Trump's rhetoric has effectively dampened hopes for a swift diplomatic solution. Sources told Reuters that the administration has rejected mediation efforts from Middle Eastern allies like Oman and Egypt. Instead, the President is pivoting toward an internationalized maritime effort, urging oil-importing nations to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz. While promising "a lot of help" from the U.S. Navy, Trump insisted that securing global energy routes must be a shared "team effort," noting that those who receive the oil must take responsibility for the passage.
Rising Death Toll and Long-Term Conflict As the conflict enters its third week, the humanitarian cost continues to mount. Since the strikes began on February 28, more than 2,000 people have been killed, the majority being in Iran. A recent strike on a factory in Isfahan reportedly claimed 15 lives. With Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei still absent from the public eye—prompting Trump to question if he is "even alive"—both sides appear dug in for a prolonged war. Tehran remains adamant that no ceasefire will be considered until the U.S.-Israeli air campaign ceases.
