As the world’s attention remains fixed on the U.S.-Israeli strikes in Iran, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a critical performance test of the state-of-the-art destroyer "Choe Hyon" on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The highlight of the drill was the successful launch of multiple "strategic" cruise missiles—a term typically denoting nuclear capability—from the 5,000-ton warship. This naval display, occurring just days after the conclusion of the 9th Workers' Party Congress, serves as a defiant signal to Washington that Pyongyang is accelerating its military buildup to counter potential "imperialist aggression."

Kim’s visit to the Nampho Shipyard underscored a new directive within the 2026–2030 Five-Year Defense Plan: the production of at least two high-class surface warships annually. He hailed the Choe Hyon as a "new symbol of sea defense," noting that the mission to arm the North Korean Navy with nuclear weapons is progressing satisfactorily. With a third destroyer of the same class already under construction and slated for completion by October, North Korea aims to transform its naval force from a coastal guard into a "blue water" navy capable of preemptive nuclear strikes, directly challenging the U.S. and its allies during a period of extreme regional volatility in the Middle East.
