Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, that Russia would view any extension of the Iranian conflict into the Caspian Sea as an "extremely negative development". This warning follows unprecedented Israeli airstrikes in northern Iran targeting naval positions in the port city of Bandar Anzali, a vital shipping hub linking Iran and Russia. Israel claimed the destruction of Iranian missile boats and strategic naval assets in the area.

The situation is high-stakes for Moscow, as both nations border the Caspian Sea and are bound by a strategic partnership agreement signed last year. Peskov noted that the Kremlin is closely monitoring conflicting reports from Washington and Tehran regarding negotiations, warning that continued military escalation threatens Russia’s direct interests and regional stability.
