President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon has underscored a pivotal lesson from the nation's turbulent history: decades of conflict have proven that no single party can achieve a definitive military victory over another, leaving negotiation as the only rational conclusion. In a significant diplomatic meeting at Baabda Palace with Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, President Aoun detailed Lebanon's commitment to the "Mechanism Committee" framework. This diplomatic path aims at a complete Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories, the liberation of detainees, and the safe return of displaced citizens to the South. The President emphasized that Lebanon is now looking for constructive reciprocity from Israel to move forward.

The discussions also pivoted toward the future of southern security following the projected UNIFIL withdrawal in 2027. President Aoun welcomed Italy’s proposal—shared by several European nations—to maintain a military presence south of the Litani River to support the Lebanese Armed Forces, which he described as the "backbone of regional stability." Minister Crosetto affirmed Italy's desire to transition its role into a sustainable security partnership post-UNIFIL. Despite these diplomatic overtures, the fragility of the peace process remains evident as Israeli forces reported strikes against Hezbollah targets near Sidon, highlighting the complex security challenges that persist on the ground.
