Legislative Rebellion: US House Defies Trump’s Threats, Votes to Repeal Canada Tariffs

In a rare bipartisan rebuke on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the US House of Representatives voted 219-211 to rescind President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods. Six Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the resolution to terminate the "national emergency" Trump used to bypass trade agreements. The vote serves as a significant blow to the President’s trade agenda, especially after he threatened "serious consequences" at the polls for any GOP member who opposed him.

The six defectors, including Reps. Thomas Massie and Dan Newhouse, cited economic harm to their home states as the primary reason for their defiance. While the measure is largely symbolic—requiring a likely-to-be-vetoed presidential signature—it highlights growing unease within the GOP ahead of the midterm elections. Critics, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, argue that the tariffs have caused prices to skyrocket, while recent polls show 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s aggressive tariff policy.
