On Saturday, February 21, 2026, President Donald Trump announced the deployment of a "great hospital boat" (likely the USNS Mercy) to Greenland to treat patients who are "not being taken care of." The mission is led by Jeff Landry, the Louisiana Governor and Trump's special envoy to the Arctic. Trump posted an AI-generated image of the massive vessel navigating icy waters, declaring, "It's on the way!!!"

Denmark and Greenland were quick to push back. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that the population already receives high-quality, free healthcare and that there is "no justification" for an American medical intervention. This move follows months of Trump’s rhetoric regarding the acquisition of Greenland for "national security" against Russia and China. Experts view the hospital ship as a "Trojan Horse" to establish a humanitarian foothold in the strategic territory following a "framework deal" with NATO.
